Modem Vs Router

What is a Modem?

Modem, hardware equipment converting data into an appropriate format for a communication medium to transmit from one computer to the other. Modems accomplish both modulation and demodulation jobs instantaneously and this is the reason for resulting in the name as the modem, an amalgamation of the terms “modulate” and “demodulate.”

What is a Router?

Router, a device analyzing data packets content diffused within one network or to the other. The routers available at home and minor networks are very much precisely can also be called as a residential gateway. A router serves to be the primary string of security from interruption to a network.
Modems and Routers are the major peripherals of computer which are similar in appearance. Though the two devices appear to be similar, they are used for different reasons. Auspiciously, the functionality of these two devices is easy to understand. Now let us go through some of the differences between Modem and Router.

Difference Between Modem and Router

Description

The modem enables to receive a connection from the internet by diffusing and getting data through telephone lines. It brings the internet to home or business.

A Router directs data in a network, connecting to the modem and generate a private network to receive data within a range like home computers, offices, business places. A Router helps in passing the internet connection to all the devices in a place.

IP Address

The modem contains the public IP address identified on the internet.

The router allows the local IP address to every single device on the same network.

Network Usage

WAN (Wide Area Network) is used

LAN (Local Area Network) is used

Process

Modem demodulates the incoming and modulates the outgoing analog signals into a digital signal and vice-versa.

A router is a connecting device that forwards data packets between computer networks and regulates its path to influence the destination computer.

Connections

The modem is used to connect to one computer through Ethernet Port

The Router is used to connect to one or more computers or networking devices through WiFi or Ethernet

Operated Layers

A modem is operated on a Data link layer or OSI Model

The Router is operated on the Data Link Layer, Physical Layer, and Network Layers of OSI Model

Security Measures

The modem does not provide security actions; thus, security hazard is constantly expected

The router provides security actions to shield the network

Data Packet

The modem does not examine a data packet

The router examines every data packet before forwarding it

Information Sharing

A modem can work in the absence of a router transferring information through the internet to a computer

Routers are able to share information between multiple computers, but will not be able to connect to the internet in the absence of a modem.

Connected through

The modem is connected to the telephone line via RJ11 and to a router through RJ45

The router uses RJ45 to connect to the computer network

Types

Type of Modems: Half, Full Duplex, and Two-wire modems

Types of Routers: Broadband, Edge, Wired, and Wireless routers

In-built function

The modem can have an inbuilt wireless router in a single device

Routers cannot function without Modem

Ports

Number of Ports in Modem: Two (2) Ports in Modem, where one is for connecting to ISP and the other to connect with the router

Number of Ports in Router: 2/4/5/8

Connection with Switch

The modem is nowhere connected to Switch

Most of the routers either have inbuilt switches or an external switch to connect to multiple devices

Where is it placed

The modem is placed between a telephone line and a router or directly to a computer

The router is placed between a computer network and a modem

IP Server Connectivity

The modem does not provide IP server connectivity

The router provides IP server connectivity
