The CISSP certification is recognized worldwide and is valued by a lot of companies globally. It was developed by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2. It was introduced in 1994 and is considered the most desirable security certification in LinkedIn. It apparently meets the ISO/IEC Standard 17024. IT professionals often seek the CISSP certification because organizations tend to look for applicants who have made it through the CISSP exam and have a certification. Applicants who have a CISSP credential are generally knowledgeable about cybersecurity in order to be able to pass the CISSP certification exam. They also tend to have practical hands-on experience. The cost of the CISSP exam is around $699 though the exact price may vary depending on where the exam is located. The CISSP credential is valid for up to three years after which participants would need to recertify. Recertification is possible considering that the participants have paid the annual maintenance fee (which costs around $85) and submitted at least 40 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits each year. CPEs can be earned by attending conferences and seminars, teaching or taking classes, taking part in professional writing, volunteering and other professional activities on areas that are covered by the Common Body of Knowledge.
Since the CISSP certification is aimed towards working cybersecurity experts and professionals that have substantial experience in this field, participants should not merely depend on formal CISSP training to obtain their skills and knowledge in order to pass the exam. CISSP Requirements
In order to be CISSP-certified, candidates do not only need to pass the CISSP exam but moreover, it is required that they have a minimum of five years of full-time, paid, work experience with skills in at least 2 of the 8 domains in the (ISC)2 CISSP Common Body of Knowledge or CBK.
Participants can receive a one-year waiver if they meet one of the following requirements:
- They have a four-year college degree or regional equivalent
- They have an advanced degree in information security from CAEIAE in the U.S
- They have a credential from the (ISC)2 approved list.
Upon satisfying one year of experience required as listed above, they will then need to have four years of relevant work experience.
Another option is to pass the CISSP exam and earn an Associate of (ISC)2. Then, the individual will have to work for six years to earn a required work experience for the CISSP.
Additionally, after passing the CISSP exam and validating an individual’s work experience, they will need to find an (ISC)2 sponsor for endorsement. They would have to subscribe to the (ISC)2 Code of Ethics and complete an endorsement form in order to become a CISSP. This form needs to be signed by another (ISC)2 certified professional who verifies an individual’s work experience. This form needs to be completed nine months of passing the CISSP exam in order for a candidate to be fully certified. In order to pass the CISSP certification exam, a participant needs to score a minimum of 700 points out of a maximum score of 1000.
CISSP Exam Format
The CISSP exam duration is for 6 hours and comprises of 250 questions. The exam paper consists of multiple choice and advanced innovative questions.
